All the participants in the Financial Services Summit joined one of the following seven breakout sessions for two hours of the Summit, contributing their expertise to a consideration of the issues. Each session had an official scribe who took notes about the content of each session presentation (see links to notes below). Session participants recorded their ideas on idea charts. (see link to idea charts below). These ideas will provide the framework for a cluster action plan.

A Qualified Talent Pool: Finding & Supplying Entry-Level EmployeesThe financial services industry faces a chronic shortage of qualified candidates to fill a critical need for occupations within teller, customer service associate, and financial sale/service associate positions. This session will explore the need for a clear skill model to facilitate job matches and will address the issue of how to market and recruit prospective job candidates to fill entry-level occupations. Other issues such as how to increase the skill base of the labor pool to include stronger customer service skills and other position qualifications will also be addressed.

2. Finding Seasoned Talent: Attraction & Diversity of Mid-level ManagementWhy are relatively few women and minorities applying for mid-level management positions in the financial services industry and what can be done to attract a more inclusive workforce? With a burgeoning demand for skilled workers clearly the finance industry needs to develop effective, proactive outreach strategies or approaches to attract, retain, and promote greater numbers of women and minorities and others who for one reason or another have not been full partners in the financial services workforce. This session will spotlight the internal and external obstacles to full inclusion and discuss various ways to promote it.

The Right Choice: Image of the Industry & Its Effect on Career Choice in FinanceWith financial services corporation logos lighting up the Pittsburgh skyline, adorning corporate towers and sporting arenas, many might agree that the financial services industry has gone above and beyond other industries in self promotion. While customers might identify with a corporate brand in lights, this session will argue that branding goes far beyond neon in that it must imbed itself within the entire work experience for every employee. The need to find a way to promote the knowledge of the career opportunities in the financial services industry and the need to increase image awareness in the labor market will be also be addressed while developing solutions on ways to make financial services the career of choice in our region.

The Bottom Line: Investing in Student and Youth DevelopmentHow is it possible to ensure that emerging students and educators stay abreast of the skills and competencies that provide both the individual and the region with robust labor market opportunities? The promotion of career opportunities and hands financial services skills will address the need to expose students to the growing opportunities with the industry and prepare a labor force that will meet the needs of the financial services industry. This session will uncover readily available tools for employers to become engaged in the education system, explain the value of investing in youth programs, and ultimately develop a youth friendly system for finding career opportunities in finance.

To establish our region as a leader in financial services it is essential to provide emerging workers with the tools necessary to success. What are these skills, do schools have the same vision as employers, and what should the region do about ensuring alignment with demand needs? This session will explore the regional interest in creating a financial services academy and will explain the growing need for more students to be exposed to skills needed to success in the industry.
