Tony Atwater, Ph.D.
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
Youngstown State University


Tony Atwater previously served as Dean of the College of Professional Studies and Education at Northern Kentucky University where he held the rank of Professor in the Department of Communication.  Dr. Atwater earned a Ph.D. degree in communication research from Michigan State University, where he was the recipient of a competitive doctoral fellowship and an excellence in teaching award.  He also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in mass media arts from Hampton University.  Dr. Atwater is a Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow and the focus of his research has been news selection behavior in the mass media.  He has published approximately 30 refereed journal articles on the subject.  Earlier administrative assignments have included roles as Chairperson of the Rutgers University Department of Journalism and Mass Media and Special Assistant to the Provost at the University of Connecticut.  Atwater also has served as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Toledo.  Dr. Atwater has been active in community leadership efforts throughout his career. These efforts included serving on the Kentucky Governor Task Force on Youth and Substance Abuse Prevention, on the Board of Trustees of the Northwest Ohio Public Television Foundation, and as a member of the 2000-2001 delegation of Leadership Cincinnati.


Jeffrey L. Nolte, Ph.D.

Dr. Jeffrey Nolte has been Dean of the Kent State University Campus since July 1, 1998. Dr. Nolte previously held the position of Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) from 1994 until coming to Salem.  While at MCLA, Nolte developed a Lifelong Learning Program designed to meet the education needs of different audiences.  The program included partnerships with business and industry and Two-plus-Two programs with area high schools.  Also included were certificate programs in non-profit management, horticulture, management, writing, computer graphics and software, and other areas. Nolte holds a Ph.D. in Adult and Continuing Education from Kansas State University and a Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees from the University of Kansas.

Dr. Carolyn A. Martin is a world-class educator, author, keynote speaker and Master Trainer for RainmakerThinking, Inc., as well as the dean of our faculty.  An expert on generational differences in the workplace and on leading management practices, Carolyn uses Bruce Tulgan's groundbreaking work to help organizations get the best work out of the best people on a consistent basis.  A member of the National Speakers Association, Carolyn has touched the lives of thousands of professionals throughout the United States, Canada and Japan. She has consistently received rave reviews for her humor, practicality and passion.  With Bruce Tulgan, Carolyn is the co-author of Managing Generation Y (HRD Press, 2001) and Managing the Generation Mix (HRD Press, 2002).  Carolyn's recent clients include Ernst & Young, the American Management Association, Junior Achievement of America, Volkswagen, Los Alamos National Laboratories, State Farm, Kraft Foods, Johnson & Johnson - Merck Consumer Pharmaceuticals Co., McNeil Consumer Products, Ace Hardware, DAS University, the CIA, the USDA Graduate Training School, the University of Dayton Center for Leadership and Executive Development, Quaker Oats, Texas Instruments, and the Society of Human Resource Management.  Prior to joining RainmakerThinking, Carolyn spent ten years on the faculty of National Seminars Group in Kansas. Carolyn holds a Ph.D. in English from Rutgers University.  She served as an Associate Professor and Dean of Student Services at Georgian Court College in Lakewood, NJ.  She is also a published poet, as well as the author of four audio management-training programs.
